How to change the colour of your car in Dubai: wrap or paint?

There are two honest ways to give a car a new colour: a colour-change wrap and a full repaint. One takes days and can be undone, the other takes weeks and is permanent. This guide compares them point by point, explains when each one makes sense, walks through the registration update and lists what the price depends on. McLaren 600LT – Car wrapping, Orange

Two ways to change the colour of your car

Colour-change wrap

A cast vinyl film is laid over the factory paint panel by panel with the edges tucked under. Gloss, satin, matte, metallic, colour-flip, chrome or textured, in any shade from the catalogue.

  • 3–5 days in the workshop
  • Fully reversible
  • Factory paint stays protected under the film
  • No sanding, no primer, no booth

Full repaint

The panels are sanded, primed, painted and clear-coated in a booth, then polished. Door jambs, the engine bay and the boot can be painted too, so the colour is the same everywhere you look.

  • 1–3 weeks depending on preparation
  • Permanent
  • Any paint code, factory or custom
  • Fixes chips, scratches and faded clear coat at the same time

Wrap vs paint: side by side

Pros and cons

Colour-change wrap

Pros

  • You can change your mind: removal brings the factory colour back
  • A few days instead of weeks
  • Protects the paint from sand, stone chips and UV
  • Finishes paint cannot give: satin chrome, colour-flip, brushed metal
  • Partial options: roof, bonnet, mirrors, accents
  • Usually cheaper than a quality respray
  • Change the colour again next season

Cons

  • Lasts less than paint, especially on cars parked in the sun
  • Edges, deep recesses and sharp curves need an experienced installer
  • Door jambs and the engine bay keep the original colour
  • Does not fix bad paint: film follows every dent and needs sound paint underneath
  • Automatic brush washes and pressure washers at the edges are off limits

Full repaint

Pros

  • Permanent, one decision for years
  • The colour is everywhere, including jambs and the engine bay
  • Repairs chips, scratches and a faded clear coat in the same job
  • The longest-lasting result
  • Can be topped with PPF or ceramic coating for protection

Cons

  • Takes weeks, not days
  • Cannot be undone
  • Quality depends entirely on the booth and the painter: cheap jobs peel and fade
  • A non-factory colour can hurt the resale value
  • More expensive than a wrap on the same car

Why most owners in Dubai choose a wrap

Easy to go back

A colour-change wrap is a decision you can undo. The film comes off with heat in a day, leaves no residue, and the car is in its factory colour again.

Colours by season

Satin white for the summer, dark grey for the winter. Some of our clients re-wrap once a year, others for an event or simply a new mood.

The paint stays like new

Sand, sun and bird droppings hit the film, not the paint. A wrapped car that comes back for removal usually has better paint than one that drove bare.

Sell in the original colour

Before you sell, we remove the film. The buyer gets the factory colour and paint that was protected for years.

When a repaint is the right choice

The paint itself is tired

Peeling clear coat, faded roof, sanded repairs: film will show all of it. Paint fixes it.

You want the colour in every corner

Door jambs, under the bonnet, inside the boot. Only paint gives a true full colour change.

You keep the car for years

If the colour is final and the car is staying with you, paint is the longer-lasting option.

After bodywork

Panels replaced after an accident are painted to the factory code, then the rest can be wrapped or left as is.

Do I need to update the registration? Yes, if the colour changes

In Dubai the colour on the registration card (Mulkiya) must match the car. Wrap or paint makes no difference; what matters is whether the colour changed. The steps are simple and we guide every client through them.

  1. Colour-change permit

Apply to Dubai Police for the permit (NOC) online through the app or website: plate number, current and new colour, photos of the car.

  2. Change the colour

Wrap or paint at our workshop. We take the photos the permit asks for.

  3. Technical inspection

The car passes a vehicle inspection at a testing centre in the new colour.

  4. Registration update

RTA records the new colour on the Mulkiya.

If the work is done at Desert Diamond, we handle the colour registration for you free of charge: you provide the documents, we do the rest. A wrap or PPF in the same colour as the registration needs no update. In Abu Dhabi the procedure is similar through Abu Dhabi Police. Fees change from time to time, so check the current amounts with Dubai Police and RTA.

What the price depends on

Wrap

  • Size of the car and complexity of the panels
  • Film brand and finish: matte, satin, chrome and colour-flip cost more than gloss
  • Full wrap or partial (roof, bonnet, accents)
  • Removal of an old wrap, if any

Paint

  • Preparation: dents, rust, old repairs
  • Number of panels, jambs and engine bay
  • Paint type: solid, metallic, pearl, candy
  • Final polish and protection (PPF, ceramic coating)

Send a photo of the car and the model in WhatsApp and we will confirm the price the same day. Tabby split payments are available.

Questions we hear every week

Is it legal to change the colour of a car in Dubai?

Yes. You need a colour-change permit from Dubai Police, a technical inspection after the change and an update of the registration card by RTA. For Desert Diamond clients we handle all of this free of charge. Driving a car whose colour does not match the registration can lead to a fine and a block on renewal.

How long does a colour-change wrap last in the UAE?

Three to five years for a quality cast film that is hand-washed and parked in the shade when possible. Cheap calendared film can start to fade and shrink within a year or two in our sun, which is why we only use cast films.

Can I go back to the original colour?

Yes. The film is removed with heat, leaves no residue on factory paint, and the car is in its original colour the same day.

Does a wrap damage the paint?

Not on sound factory paint. On panels that were repainted badly or have a peeling clear coat, the film can lift paint on removal, which is why we inspect the paint before wrapping.

Can I change the colour every season?

Yes, and some clients do. Removal of the old film and a new wrap take about a week in total.

Wrap or paint for resale?

A wrap keeps the factory paint and colour for the next owner. A repaint in a non-factory colour usually lowers the price; a respray in the original paint code does not.

How long does each take?

A full colour-change wrap takes three to five days. A full repaint takes ten to twenty days, depending on preparation.

How much does a car colour change cost in Dubai?

It depends on the car, the film or paint and how much work the body needs, so we quote per car. Send a photo and the model in WhatsApp and you will have the price the same day.

We do both

Wrapping and painting are both done at Desert Diamond in Al Quoz, so we have no reason to push one over the other. Send a few photos and tell us what you want from the new colour; we will say honestly which route fits. Sometimes it is a wrap, sometimes a respray, and sometimes paint on the panels that need it with film on the rest.
